My students need new, organized bookshelves for their leveled library! These shelves will help them choose and organize their books during reader's workshop!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember your favorite childhood book? You probably read it over and over again, until the pages were so worn that they had to be replaced :-) My students do that on a daily basis! They love books so much that our current bookshelves are falling apart, and our books are in need of a new home.
I have 21 kindergarten students in my class, ages 5-6.
They are from different families, different backgrounds, and they have had different life experiences. I can truly say that though only 2 children came in reading, every single child will leave my classroom this year reading (and loving it)! This is no small task! Although many of my students had the benefit of preschool, about ten of them did not. Many of my students came in knowing little to none of their letters or letter sounds. We spent lots of the year (with the help of our Donors Choose friends!) learning letters, sounds, and phonemic awareness skills. Now we spend lots of time decoding words and learning new comprehension skills that will help us become lifelong readers and learners.
My Project
I am requesting two nice, sturdy bookshelves for my class. The bookshelves are labeled and come with stickers to attach to the books themselves, to create a leveled library. Part of our reader's and writer's workshop model is teaching students how to use a book library and how to choose appropriate books. To have the resources available to allow my students to do this would be invaluable!
Our current bookshelves have been "over-loved" -- they are falling apart due to constant use! While this is great, because my students clearly love to read, I would love to replace their bookshelves with sturdy, long-lasting bookshelves (which have a lifetime guarantee)! My students now, as well as my future students, will be able to use these bookshelves, and most importantly, it eliminates the book baskets which are truly too heavy for the children to move around. This would allow a nice, easy system for kindergarten learners.
I try to make my classroom as nice as possible for my students.
If the learning environment is inviting and child-friendly, the children are able to adjust easily. I would love to have a system that my students can really adjust to, on bookshelves that my students don't have to worry about breaking each day!
