Kindergarten Phonics Come To Life

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. White's classroom raised $380

How can we read if we can't learn our letters and sounds? Currently, I am teaching Kindergarten to the most wonderful group of children. This is my second year teaching Kindergarten and I absolutely love it. The children in my class are very sweet and loving to each other and me. They are extremely encouraging and helpful to one another. The sad thing is that most of my students do not get the encouragement and help they deserve at home. I come from a low socio-economic school that truly lacks parent support. When some of my students entered Kindergarten, they had never been to preschool and some had never been in an environment with children other than their siblings. Most of my students did not know any letters or numbers, could not write their name, and had never used glue or scissors. I knew I had my work cut-out for me! As the school year began, my children were struggling recognizing letters and learning sounds. Some of the students have learned their letters and sounds, but I still have a lot of students who are struggling. It is very important for Kindergarteners to have hands-on materials to enrich their learning experience. Their attention spans are not meant to sit on a rug and listen to a lecture on the letters, sounds, how to read words, etc. The best way for Kindergarteners to learn is to have interaction with their subject and get involved. My class gets so excited when we get to go to learning centers or play educational games. The children are pumped up and ready to learn when they have hands-on activities. However, the reason we do not have a lot of hands-on activities and interactive learning centers is because there is no funding. At the beginning of the year, our school had a budget cut and the teachers were only given $150 for classroom materials. By the time I got all the copy paper, cardstock, and construction paper I needed for copies and projects, I was left with just enough to buy the children’s school supplies. The majority of the children cannot afford their school supply list, so I provide them with all the supplies they need for the year. I wish I could afford to buy these learning centers, but I am only a second year teacher and I do not make enough money. I am asking for nine different resources. These sources include sorting boards, beginning and ending sound learning centers, alphabet boxes, writing cards, and a magnetic word building set. If the children had these learning centers, they would have so much fun learning phonics. The children would get excited about learning and would aspire to do better. I have found that when the students get excited about learning, they learn even more. These resources would be a wonderful edition and would be used everyday. The skill levels range, so it would benefit every student, from my lowest to highest. It would be a “dream come true” for my students to have the opportunity to use these valuable resources. If you help our classroom, you will be changing the life of seventeen wonderful children and countless others in future years. Kindergarten is such a vital year. This is the year that a child’s educational foundation is set for their entire academic future. You could truly make a difference and help these children build a strong foundation that leads them to success in the future. The children in my room are so caring and loving to others. They would greatly appreciate the caring and loving act of your donation. Please open your heart up to these children, so they can learn how to read. That is a gift that will stay with them forever!
