My students need an equipment cart and assorted resources to get their brains thinking about letters, words, and numbers! Research shows movement can make learning more meaningful.
Obesity is on the rise in our nation. While I must teach common core standards, incorporating movement throughout the day in math and language arts will increase physical activity while not taking away from the rigor of the classroom. I want a classroom full of movers and shakers!
Think Mayberry!
My rural community in Georgia is a hidden gem. We are far enough off the interstate that we still have a small town feel. There is a draw back of this small town. The families who live here have been hit hard by the economy. Many want to support our school financially but are barely making ends meet at home. Our local taxes are very sparse because of our lack of industry. We are not considered a Title One School so our state and federal funding is limited.
There is one primary (PreK-2), one elementary (3-5), and one middle and high school in our county. Many of the students who begin in kindergarten stay throughout their career to graduate.
My Project
Let's Get Moving! Activity Mats will allow me to incorporate movement into independent centers. For example, when we are learning teen numbers, I can place one mat with a teen number in a center. If the mat shows skipping, then the student will skip the designated number of times.
The I Can Spell Activity Mat will allow students to spell words by hopping to the correct letters. This is an absolutely perfect activity for kinders.
Sight Word Steps are a wonderful way to increase fluency of sight words. I can only imagine the fun that could be had! We could arrange them like a game board. Hopping, running, or skipping could be incorporated.
Let's Get Moving! Numbers & Counting Kit provides movement activities for numbers 1-10.
The Lakeshore Active Play Kit provides essentials that I can not borrow from our Physical Education Department. The Equipment Cart would allow our class to store all of our incredible equipment so it would be easily accessible! We want to move and shake all day.
Active students turn into active adults.
We know one way to fight obesity is to increase physical activity. What better way to solve some of our nation's growing problems than to teach students that physical activity should not be dreaded. Research also shows that students who are moving while learning are better engaged. Movement in the classroom can also lead to fewer discipline problems. You can invest in a healthier future for these kids! Let's make some movers and shakers!
