This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My school is in a suburban town of a medium-sized city. This year, our school has 432 students as reported in our September 20th count. 55% (approx) were approved for free and reduced lunch. Our school is in a community where members collaborate and make decisions in the best interests of the students, schools, and families. I live and work in this community.
I have 18 students in my class.
Three require speech and language services. Four speak English as a second language. Four have individualized education plans (IEPs) for math, reading or behavior. Six students receive intervention services for math or reading.
My Project
Stretching poses and mindfulness activities are used with children who need support with sensory and social skills such as self-awareness, decision making, and identifying feelings. Using these stretches and poses will help to increase the chance of positive mental health. In schools, students are asked to try new things that may cause anxiety and frustration. This may not include students who need sensory supports.
Practicing mindfulness poses and breathing techniques give students the ability to focus on being attentive at the moment and build self-awareness.
Kindergarten students need a way to channel their attention to cope with the demands of a classroom. I have several students who could benefit from mindfulness activities and sensory supports.
This year I would like to gift my students with life skills that they can use anywhere & anytime they are struggling with emotions or difficult situations. I will teach them coping strategies using breathing techniques and stretching poses to increase their positive mental health. Doing stretching poses and mindfulness activities increase students' abilities to manage their emotions and deal with multiple daily school transitions. Listening to positive affirmations and literature will support students' growth in self-confidence and self-worth.
