It can be challenging to fill every minute of a 9-hour school day with engaging activities, but I'm up to the challenge!

My creative, cunning, and cute Kindergarten boys (yes, all boys!) crave hands-on, engaging, kinesthetic learning materials during our 9-hour school day. My school implements this extended day in order to help our scholars achieve superior academic success, and prepare them for college and beyond. Throughout the day we take "brain breaks," which may include counting backwards while doing jumping jacks, finding a sum and doing that many push-ups, or counting to see how long we can run in place. My school serves the historically under-privileged population of African Americans in North Minneapolis; we strive to close the achievement-gap AND the belief-gap.

My Project

These materials are aligned with the Common Core State Standards, which will help my scholars build a foundation for college readiness. I've chosen these resources because they will enhance the math lessons throughout the year, and will help solidify my scholars' knowledge about numbers, counting, addition/subtraction, measurement, time, and money. I will teach my scholars how to use the Early Math Folder Game Libraries and Measurement & Data Folder Game Library so they can work independently or with a partner. The "Zingo! Number Bingo Game" will be used is small or large groups as a fun way to practice number identification. There are also a number of money and coin practice materials that will provide extra hands-on learning time for this difficult concept. We will utilize the write-on/wipe-off number line throughout the year when learning about addition and subtraction.

The requested materials will help my current and future scholars build a solid foundation in mathematics.

My dream is for these scholars to show others that it is COOL to be knowledgeable and to be in school, and to become positively contributing members of their community in North Minneapolis and wherever their lives lead them.
