Kindergarten Math Using STEM Materials

Help me give my students Magna-Tiles for a way to increase language skills by teaching magnet-related words, names, and shapes. Magnet play also helps children develop their coordination skills, increase fine motor skills and develop spatial and tactile skills.

My Students

My children are constantly sharing about themselves and their lives. They are very proud of their backgrounds and their families and friends. Every day they share with each other about what they find important, both at home and at school. This always opens up dialogue between the students and helps build a safe learning community where they are free to be themselves.

For many of the children, this is their first year in school and as they learn more about each other the children learn more about possibilities of what they can become.

In kindergarten, the children learn as much about social skills as they do academics so it is a joy to see them learn not just from me but from each other as well. The children love coming to school to learn together and I find that I learn as much from them as they learn from me.

My Project

Kindergarten students learn in a variety of ways but I have found they learn best when they have something in their hands and they are playing together. These Magna Tiles will help my students improve both their language and math skills while developing social skills as well.

I use magnet play to help my students increase their language skills by teaching them new vocabulary around 2-D and 3-D shapes as well as spatial and social vocabulary.

This is invaluable for my children who speak English as a second language. Their speaking skills improve daily as they build and talk with peers using the Magna TIles.

Using Magna Tiles also helps the kindergarten students improve their spatial math and tactile skills as they stack, sort, count the tiles while using them to support geometric concepts that are introduced. Magnet play can also help children develop their coordination skills, increase their fine motor skills, and learn a variety of problem-solving skills.
