This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I am a Kindergarten teacher in an ASD Nest classroom at PS 151K located in Brooklyn, NY. My Nest Kindergarten classroom is an integrated classroom that welcomes 12 students, between General Education and Autistic students. PS151K is a Title 1 school, which means a high percentage of our students are from low-income households, that may not have access to educational learning resources at home.
By donating to my project, you will provide my students a Math Library that will provide meaningful context to the lessons taught and would allow them to reinforce the concepts and skills to increase their academic achievement.
For instance, 21 of the books in my project are the MathStart Series level 1, books specifically designated for Kindergarten and First Grade students, that deal with concepts such as matching, counting, measurement, shapes, doubles, etc. The remaining 29 books had been suggested to implement and reinforce our new Math Curriculum, Illustrative Math. The stories in those books include situations that have math concepts naturally embedded in them, allowing children to see math as a common human activity. Math in the familiar context and structure of literature allows children to see math as an integral part of their daily lives.
My autistic students need additional supports to make meaningful connections with concepts taught and to understand the context of events. This is why being equipped with the necessary tools is the key for our autistic students to be able to thrive in an integrated community school academically.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
