Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Kindergartners are busy and engaged all day long--learning the alphabet, learning to interact with books, learning to work with partners, learning to count, and even figuring out all the stages of a butterfly's life cycle! For many, this is their first school experience. Many come from high poverty homes, and this means that they already have a lot of "catching up" to do in terms of school-readiness skills.
But in spite of the many challenges they face, my Kindergartners are enthusiastic, cheerful, and so excited to come to school each day.
Our school is an innovative charter school that aims to teach the whole child through its focus on health and wellness. Our students have P.E. everyday and are provided with a healthy school lunch. Our school provides a nurturing environment and our curriculum is rigorous. My students now need many opportunities to engage with materials that will help them ask more questions, test out ideas, and develop even more theories about the way the world works.
My Project
The materials for this project – ramps, gears, tools—will all allow my students to hone their observation skills, test out hypotheses and develop new ones. They are chosen with my students' wide array of interests in mind.
Can you imagine how joyful learning might be in a classroom that contains hammers, saws, wires and ramps?
Some are builders who would love to take their block creativity to the next level by developing blueprints and using real nails and hammers. Others build complex structures just out of tape and cardboard. I have seen many different kinds of ramps built by my students, and ramp sets would provide an exciting way for these students to explore all the different kinds of forces at play with ramps. My students will learn that their interests can drive deep learning and that their questions and ideas are worth recording and exploring.
My young students study hard all day learning to read and write, but these materials would give them an authentic purpose for their learning and transform our classroom into a meaningful and magical space.
