First grade is an exciting year full of many social and developmental changes. I have a very engaged group of students and they love to learn. However, there are times when “teachable moments” are interrupted due to outdated and insufficient materials that I am using to teach them.
Our 100-year-old school is a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural school, serving students in pre-l through 8th grade.
We celebrate diversity on a daily basis and look for ways to create a learning environment that appeals to all types of learners. We are nestled in a southside Chicago neighborhood, walking distance from a large university.
Students have spent the last year learning from home with their families or in a restructured preschool setting. Because of this, some students did not have access to the materials they needed to help develop their fine motor skills.
The materials provided in this project will help facilitate and promote creativity while developing skills necessary to succeed in Kindergarten and beyond.
Students will be provided with tools that support letter knowledge and name building, such as playdough and letter stamps. Materials will also support the growth of number sense including number stamps and ten frames.
The selected resources will support writing and drawing development with large pencils, paper, dry erase markers, and paints. Students will work on their fine motor skill, while having fun cutting out objects to create stories.
