Our school is in one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the country. Our students come from diverse backgrounds: Vietnamese, Ethiopian, Somali, Thai, Mexican, African-American and Caucasian to name a few. The diversity and the way these children notice and yet don't notice it, is vibrant and endearing. What comes through the most is that all of my students have things in common. They love to learn. They love to sing. They love to explore and create. They are capable and ready, but deserve to have their learning environment "watered" with all the best resources available.

My Project

I am a primary intervention teacher at my title one school. I teach students who are struggling in reading and math. Most students I see in small groups of 4, for 30 minutes each day. The materials I am asking for are hands-on or extremely visual methods of supporting their math and reading development.

Sitting together in groups of 4, I will give focused attention to kids struggling with learning letters and sounds, basic counting and numeral identification, reading early sight words and sounding out words in early readers.

I have the time and opportunity to give targeted attention to these young kiddos before the gap becomes too wide. These materials will help me bridge that gap.

The calendar math center will allow us to focus in on one number each day in group. Seeing it, counting it, writing it and building it will ten frames. The alphabet center similarly focuses on one letter each day, modeling how to write it, showing words beginning with that letter and showing pictures of items beginning with that letter. The CVC word builders will allow kids to have hands on practice seeing a picture, sounding it out and then spelling it using letter clips. This has the dual purpose of providing spelling practice while also developing fine motor coordination and strength.
