Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every morning, my kindergarten students will be asked to read books independently by reading the pictures, reading the words, and/or retelling a story that they have read before. As part of our Reading Workshop, each of my 25 students needs 3 to 5 books for various literacy activities daily.

My school is located in a working-class, inner-city neighborhood of Los Angeles and many of my students come from low-income households.

Many of my students have parents who work multiple jobs and struggle to meet the everyday needs of their children, such as providing regular meals or a consistent bedtime. Many struggle simply to help their children with completing daily homework assignments. Yet, the children are eager to learn and come to school every day with positive attitudes, ready to build on the knowledge they have gained over time. As kindergarten students, my students need books that are decodable, using high frequency sight words, rebus pictures, and repetitive sentence structure, as they start developing good reading habits and the stamina to read longer and more difficult text.

My Project

This year, I am implementing a Readers' Workshop and A Writers' Workshop using the Daily 5 concepts which encourage daily literacy activities that include 1) reading to self, 2) reading to others, 3) listening to reading, 4) word study and 5) work on writing. This literacy format requires students to have "good fit" books that are interesting to the students and decodable/at their level. The sight word books would give students the ability to read independently and the leveled books would be available for both independent reading and small guided reading groups since there would be 5 to 10 copies of the same book. By providing students with a classroom library that is appropriate for their reading level, we would be creating an environment where students would enjoy reading, increase the amount of reading they do daily, and gain confidence in their ability to read more difficult text.

I want students to feel that books are accessible and enjoyable.

I also want them to have the confidence to pick books that are a good fit for their level...and, have the courage to pick books that challenge them yet which they are willing to work through because they are interested in them. By providing books that meet their needs, I believe that my students will learn to be lifelong readers who see books as assets instead of objects to be avoided.
