We are a Head Start Program in North Carolina. Our program serves children up to 5 years old from low-income families. Many of our children are minorities and are from young, single parent homes. In our NC PreK classroom, we have 18 children with 2 teachers. We provide all the meals (breakfast, lunch, snack), and a safe learning environment.
"Our mission is to help young children and families reach their full potential." Our resources/materials are limited.
As a teacher, I have to get creative and make good use of what we do have versus what we don't have. So we reuse and recycle materials that can be found in any way, from bottle caps to paper towel rolls. My students need additional materials that will help promote and support their learning at school.
My Project
We are coming to the end of our PreK school days. Three quarters of our class are now 5 years old. We have learned to play well with others and to writing our names.
As we continue to prepare them for Kindergarten, we want them to be able to start their new school in the Fall with a clear back pack full of supplies.
Many schools are taking measures in making sure to keep our children safe. One way is having children carry clear see through back packs. These back packs are more expensive than a typical back pack. If my project is fully funded it will ensure all my children will have an advantage as they will have their clear back pack full of school supplies when they start Kindergarten.
