Kindergarten Helpers

My students need community helper puppets, listening center, a CD player, Hokki stool, community helper theme box, and file folder games for daily learning.

My Students

My 19 energetic Kindergarten students need to move around and there is not a better way of doing that then providing them with seating choices and recess choices that allow them to get their bodies moving. Hands-on activities, movement and listening to stories is the majority of our day. Our Title I school is located in a close-knit rural community near Syracuse, New York.

Many families of our school have been in the school district for generations. I myself went to this school as a student that I am now teaching in. My kindergarten students' learning styles and needs are as diverse as their backgrounds, but they all have the yearning to be successful.

My Project

Some students at the ages five and six have a hard time sitting for an extended period of time during story time. In my classroom, I like to have students learning in various ways. After I have read a story to my students, some ask if they can have it reread to them or if they can retell the story by acting it out with puppets in the Let's Talk! Community Helpers Puppets set. The materials I'm requesting will help enrich my students in doing this.

With students learning differently, I think having options of play will allow them to learn while having fun.

One of my students complained how hard it was to sit in the chairs. It would be so beneficial to students to have other options. I hope the hokki stool will help them with focusing or give them the much needed continued movement. Also, the listening center would allow for students to hear the book again and again independently. The theme box and puppets will allow the students to have many resources the can be used to learn about helpers in their and different communities.

The teaching of young students requires me to give them options of movement choices along with various learning styles.
