Kindergarten Has a Story to Tell

My students need a storytelling board, a storytelling glove, a storytelling lapboard and storytelling kits with books for 7 titles, including "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" and "The Napping House".

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Glos's classroom raised $506

This project is fully funded

I teach Kindergarten in an urban charter school with a very diverse population. My students come from a variety of cultural, educational, and socioeconomic backgrounds. My students arrive with a wide range of skills and I need materials that can be used on multiple levels.

Many of my students come to school with limited exposure to literature and, in some cases, English. This lack of exposure to literature makes retelling and understanding stories difficult. Materials that make storytelling and responding to literature would support these skills. The storytelling pieces to support high quality children's literature will allow my struggling students to have a visual support to help with retelling. The open-ended nature of the storyboards also gives other students the flexibility to extend a story or create an original version by not limiting them to a specific set of questions.

I have requested materials for seven stories; a hardcover book and storytelling pieces of the major characters, along with a storytelling glove and two boards for using the pieces. My students will be able to use copies of the books, along with the characters to retell the stories sequentially. They will also be able to express their originality by extending and changing the stories or creating new versions. By working with books in many different ways, my students will be able to develop higher level thinking skills, build comprehension, and become excited about reading.

Your help will allow my students to become more confident readers and speakers by interacting with stories in an exciting and hands-on way. They will also be able to use their storytelling ability in their writing as they go through school.
