Kindergarten FM Development to Academic Achievement

My students need fine motor activities such as tweezers/tongs, stencils, and scissors to improve their pencil and scissor grasps in the kindergarten classroom setting.

My Students

"When it comes to (academic) achievement, many people are surprised to learn that fine motor skills are a robust predictor of achievement". Early fine motor skills in kindergarten (are) a predictor for reading and math achievement during elementary school." Wade George PsychEd

Our school has 8 kindergarten classes this year!!

We have lots of little hands in need of appropriate fine motor activities that meet the demands of the kindergarten curriculum and common core standards. Fine motor activities promote strength, coordination and functional use of materials. We are an inner city school with a limited budget for activities that are not "content related". Many of our teachers have to spend their own money to get supplies. Our children come from diverse backgrounds and experiences. These days increasingly children experience more sedentary life styles and spend more time in car seats, carriers and strollers. These children often miss out on the critical development of foundational skills such as tummy time, crawling, and experiences that promote stability and strength of core muscles, skills that are needed for developing refined smaller motor skills. Other children are exposed to the wrong tool before earlier development is mastered and develop bad habits.

My Project

In our kindergarten program students have opportunities to work in small groups called centers. Our goal is to have a fine motor center for each kindergarten classroom so children can work on developing foundational skills such as grasping, in-hand manipulation, and fine motor control. These skills are needed for forming letters, using tools like pencils and scissors and using manipulatives such as math counters and puzzle pieces. Using tongs and tweezers for picking up and sorting objects is a precursor for cutting with scissors. Three-prong tongs are good for encouraging tripod pencil grasps. Lifting the arm to place balls in the sorting tray builds stability at the shoulders which is needed for refined skilled use of the hands. Using stencils helps build good fine motor control and use of two hands which is needed for fluent handwriting.

Providing opportunities to use developmentally appropriate tools necessary for fine motor development, helps to reduce dysfunctional grasps and the struggles we now see today with handwriting.

Also, it helps to undo some of the dysfunctional grasps that that children acquire when they are exposed to larger writing implements too soon. This will improve a child's ability to participate in writing letters, cutting, and other necessary tasks related to the curriculum and academic achievement.
