My students need 25 copies of the book "The World According to Humphrey" to read at home as part of our Kindergarten Family Reading Project.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Let's get students and their families excited about reading! All Kindergarten families enjoying the same book together at the same time will be a great way to get this excitement going.
My students attend a high-poverty, Title I, elementary school in North Carolina.
When they begin school, they are eager to learn but lack the resources other students might have. Many do not have reading materials at home. I want to get them excited about learning to read as well as get their families involved.
My Project
I am requesting 25 copies of "The World According to Humphrey" by Betty Birney. My colleagues and I are planning a Kindergarten Family Reading Project where we will give each family a copy of the book about the adventures of a class hamster, Humphrey. Humphrey tells the story of all his experiences going to different students' homes.
Funding of this project will get entire families involved in their students' learning.
When the books arrive, parents will be invited for the big kick-off with activities related to the book and each family will receive their book. Each day we will discuss the chapter read the night before. We will take a field trip to the pet store down the street to purchase our own class pet. When we are finished reading the book, we will have a big celebration for families to attend.
