My students need math manipulatives, craft supplies, writing supplies, anchor charts, phonic tools, and reading material like the Big Book Easel in order learn through play and build a love for learning.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"Anyone who does anything to help a child is a hero to me."
-Fred Rodgers
I teach Kindergarten students who are often plagued with the negativity of their environment. They have to overcome poverty, behavior issues, being independent in their homes, and still come to school to learn, follow rules, and build positive relationships.
My children love to come to class and experience their safe place. I try to make sure they feel secure and have the tools that they need to overcome daily obstacles. I instill positive thoughts first so that they will have confidence in their academics. Our classroom motto is "words have power!"
My Project
Fred Rogers once said "play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning." But for children play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood." With the increase of academic standards, Kindergarten has become the new first grade. My students come in at-risk and at a disadvantage and worksheets only increases the risk of them falling behind and losing interest in learning.
I would like to create learning stations that children can rotate to throughout the day while practicing academic skills through play.
At the light cube station, children can practice phonics and math skills. At the window station, children could strengthen writing skills by practicing letter formation and sentence structure while using the window markers. Children can use the Big Book easel as a reading station where they can practice reading strategies and pointing with a partner.
I will also use some of the materials to build a morning tub center station. Children will choose morning tubs that will increase opportunity for them to work on STEM activities.
