My students are amazing sponges. The have such a great capacity for learning. I teach Kindergarten at an English-Chinese dual language school on the boundary of Chinatown in New York City. Our school is located in an area adjacent to public housing developments and old tenement buildings that have housed generations of new immigrants. The vast majority of my students begin the school year speaking only Chinese or only English. Over the course of the school year, they will become fluent in both languages.
We incorporate songs and movement into our daily routine so that my students can learn language organically.
Non-native Chinese and non-native English speaking parents are always amazed by how quickly their children pick up the new languages. Just one month into the new school year and their children are able to pronounce English and Chinese words. The walls of our school are filled with writing samples in both English and Chinese.
My Project
We live in one of the most diverse cities in the world, but my students don't venture far from home and school. While riding on the bus and subways, and walking through the streets of the city, they rub shoulders with neighbors from around the world. The majority of our students are first generation Americans. Many of their parents immigrated from distant countries, and yet few have a concrete grasp of the geography and culture of their ancestral countries.
The Osmo Detective Agency Kit will give my students a chance to learn about geography, landmarks, and cultures from around the world.
Observational and critical thinking skills will be brought into play as my students connect the dots and unravel the mysteries using the Amazon Fire Tablets. The Osmo Genius Kits will provide us with the necessary bases to use with the Osmo Detective Agency Kits while also providing my students with a host of interactive learning experiences using letters and words, number games, drawing activities, and Tangrams for practice on pattern recognition.
