Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students need to read a level 6 at the end of the year to be on grade level. Some of my students have not yet discovered books that capture their imaginations. This could be the year that magic happens and they fall in love with books and make them lifelong readers.
We are a kindergarten dual language classroom in a public school in Connecticut.
Our students are learning English and Spanish in our program. They are learning to read and write in both languages. Our students are motivated and excited to learn two languages!
My Project
My students would listen to a story at the listening center with a small group of friends. After listening to the story, they would work together to respond to the story as a small group. They would have the opportunity to discuss story elements, retell and ask questions about the story amongst themselves. Then, they would have the opportunity to work together to illustrate the story and change the ending.
These skills correspond to the Common Core Curriculum RLK 1, 3, 4 and 7.
They would be able to listen, speak, write and color during this activity. They would have the opportunity to work together and produce a project they could present to their friends.
Through these materials and this project, my students will be making judgments, arguments, providing evidence, and justification for their work.
They will be evaluating, questioning, synthesizing and creating a thoughtful response to literature. They will have the opportunity to work in flexible grouping, which will promote collaboration in multiple contexts, peer critique and eventually, collaboration beyond the classroom. If they learn these skills in kindergarten, they will be ready for life.
