Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Some people call Kindergarteners wiggle-worms but my students take wiggling to the extreme. Several of my 5-6 year old students are facing learning differences that, without accommodations, may lead to gaps in their ability to learn and retain to content.
My students are an incredibly dedicated and diverse group of students from a low-income community in Texas.
At the age of just five, they have committed themselves to attending college by coming to school for ten hours per day and taking on the significant workload that comes with being part of KIPP, or the Knowledge is Power Program, a charter school network serving low-income communities.
While their dedication to getting to and through college is evident in everything they do, many of my students are faced with learning differences that make sitting on the carpet, even for short periods of time, very difficult. With diagnoses that range from autism to ADHD, my students have a variety of challenges facing them as they venture on their journeys to and through college.
My Project
To enable my students to better focus and increase their stamina for a variety of learning opportunities (like whole and small group instruction, independent work stations and project-based learning), I am asking for several balance seats that allow students to move and control their muscles while sitting and listening attentively by diminishing extra energy and external stimulus. I am also asking for two weighted stuffed animals to help calm students who may be dealing with extreme emotional outbursts. The weight of the animals help students calm themselves and gives them an outlet for dealing with frustrations; typically, petting and holding these stuffed animals help calm students during difficult moments. Additionally, our class needs several 'fidgets,' small hand toys that allow students to transfer their wiggles and motions to a toy while continuing to focus on academic content.
All of the resources our class is requesting will contribute to their ability to pay attention, focus in class and retain information while providing them with productive outlets for their additional energy, frustrations and needs in the classroom.
Their focus will lead to more academic content being retained and more opportunities for them to engage with the rigorous content in more exciting ways and will allow them to reach their full potential in our classroom and beyond!
