I am the proud teacher of 25 bright, lovable, and energetic kindergarten students. They all come from low income families and a strict school budget. The school budget provides our classroom with the curriculum, but unfortunately we are on our own for any other materials. I am seeking your help in adding fun learning activities for center time. I have created some of my own and have purchased a few, but I need to keep rotating these centers to keep my students interested and engaged. I conduct center time while I work with a group of students with Guided Reading. I rely on center time to keep my other students busy so I can focus my attention on my small reading group. I would like to add two additional centers. First, I would like a "Sound Sorting Center" where my students can match picture cards to letter cards. This center can be broken up into 3 groups. One group can match beginning sounds to pictures, the second group can match ending sounds, and the third (more challenging) can match the middle sound or create words by identifying all 3 sounds. The second center I would like to add is a independent reading center. Most of the books we have have been donated and unfortunately they are not level readers. They are too difficult for kindergarten children to read. They simply just look at the pictures. With the readers I am requesting, I would like to see them read these books from cover to cover. These books all contain short vowel words and sight words we have been learning to read. The set contains 8 different stories so the children can switch books once they have read them. There are also four copies of each story, so they can read as a group or individually. Both of these centers will give these children the opportunity to practice skills we have been working on throughout the school year. Now, this is their opportunity to perform these skills cooperatively in groups without my help. Please help me make these centers possible. We appreciate any help you are able to provide. We thank you for your time and consideration.
