Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I remember being little & being mesmerized by a story. I remember loving to hear my teacher read to us around the carpet; I remember loving to hear my mother read to me at bedtime; I remember that love for reading growing as I got older. I believe the love for reading is instilled at a young age.
I currently teach the Spanish component in a dual language Kindergarten classroom in a high poverty, high needs community in New York.
These 50 students, both English-proficient students learning Spanish and Spanish-proficient students learning English, are split into two classes and receive equal instruction in both languages until 5th grade. When they graduate elementary school, they will be fully bilingual in both languages, being able to read, write, and speak both.
How many adults in today's society wish they had had the opportunity to learn another language? With today's changing economy and job outlook, it is in a child's best interest to achieve proficiency in at least two languages in order to compete with others when they get older. Learning a new language opens a door that not everyone has the chance to see through. Why limit these kids to just their neighborhood? Just their city? Just their country? The world can be theirs!
My Project
My students love having a Spanish listening center, which was so generously donated to us by donors on donorschoose. We've read through those books plenty of times, and more than anything, we'd love to add these beloved titles to our center. The kids loved hearing The Three Little Pigs, Corduroy, and The Runaway Bunny during read aloud time; they would love to be able to have multiple copies to listen to on their own.
From a logical point of view, it helps them hear how the story should be read, with the correct intonations.
This helps them match words to sounds, and will help them read much quicker. These books will be an encouragement for them to continue reading, to continue nurturing their love for literature and for something as simple as a good story.
