Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I'm the Media Specialist at a Title One school with a wonderfully diverse group of students. This year I'm especially focused on our youngest readers, Kindergarten and 1st grade, who visit the library every week to build the foundation skills that will carry them through their whole school career. Read-aloud time is one of the most important parts of their week, and I want every child on the carpet to be able to see the words and pictures, not just hear them.

We need Big Books, the over-sized fiction and nonfiction editions made specifically for group read-alouds.

Because of their massive size, every student sitting on the carpet can actually see the text and illustrations, follow along with print concepts, and stay engaged in a way that's just not possible with a regular-sized book held up from the front of the room. For Kindergarten and 1st grade especially, this matters enormously: it's how young readers learn how print works, build vocabulary, and start to fall in love with stories. We actually have no big books in our library, and we want a strong Big Book collection covering both fiction and nonfiction so every lesson can be engaging for the class as a whole.

As a teacher, I give a lot from my own pocket and I do so willingly and happily because I want to make sure my students feel successful in their environment. But Big Books are a specialized, often pricier format, and it's hard to build the collection our K-1 students deserve on my own. That's why I'm asking our community for support. Teachers wouldn’t be able to do what we do without the support of the people in our communities.
