My students need crayons, markers, glue, clay, dry erase markers, a pencil sharpener, number and color wall signs, and hook and loop adhesive for learning posters.
In just a few short weeks, twenty kindergarten students will walk through our classroom door for the first time. EVERYTHING will be new to them. Many of the sights and experiences will be the first in a long and exciting academic journey.
Nearly all of my students will come from low-income and high-need communities. Some will not know how to count to ten or sing their ABCs. Some will only get a hot meal at school. My kids need and deserve so much more than they have now. Unfortunately many of their classroom needs are paid for by myself. Every year I spend nearly $700 on new school supplies and classroom supplies for my students. Sadly, my school does not have the funds to purchase enough supplies to last us through the year (or even the first few weeks). If I didn't shop for my students, they would walk in and have no crayons, markers, sharpened pencils or visual learning aids.
Donors Choose and generous sponsors have been my saving grace for a variety of things, but now I come to you with the most pressing of needs: basic supplies. With these items, my students will not be held back because of a financial deficit in the education system. They will have materials at their finger tips to be artists, linguists, mathematicians, librarians, researchers and problem solvers. With your help they will have access to crayons, markers, sharpened pencils, visual aids, and clay to help with fine motor skills. These are items that EVERY child deserves to have in his/her classroom.
