it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
An apple a day.... but what about 2,3,4,5,.... apples? or oranges? or strawberries? My kindergarten students need many different and fun ways of counting, sorting and comparing groups of items. They need this daily and with the variety, their teacher can set up many fun independent learning centers
I teach 24 eager kindergarten students.
We are a public charter in the heart of the inner city. My students naturally want to explore their environment and all learning for them should be hands on whenever possible. I teach in an inner city school with a diverse student population. My kindergarten students range from students with little opportunities and access to materials to students who have had many opportunities to create and learn. Our school strives to provide opportunities for all of our students so that all may have a rich background as they move through elementary to middle school. With more budget cuts each year, there is less money for anything other than the core curriculum and the minimum of materials for learning. The few students in my class who have been fortunate to have many experiences and access to many materials, have a stronger vocabulary and make many real-world connections. I want all my students to have access to varied learning materials on a daily basis.
My Project
I am requesting a common core math set for creating independent work stations for students to master their learning and skills in math. I've also chosen colorful and fun sets of counters and counting games. The new kindergarten common core standards require kindergarten students to count to 100 and use place value grouping tens and ones. The counters I've selected would be perfect for creating many counting opportunities as well as enhancing other areas of mathematics practice such as patterns, sorting, and comparing sets of more and less. They will be as excited about math time as I am.
I am confident that these materials will provide many hours of focused practice in the lives of these kindergarten students this year and years to come.
The varied colors, sizes, shapes and games, will inspire students to anticipate the next counting challenge in our classroom. I think they may even be inspired to create their own challenges for each other, all while mastering their math standards and preparing themselves to be confident and ready first graders.
