Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Walt Disney said "There is more treasure in books than in all the pirate's loot on Treasure Island." Help our students author and illustrate their own stories to treasure forever!

Many of my students are impoverished.

Over 90% of my class receives free or reduced breakfast and lunch. Over 90% of the students in my class are also second language learners. Our school site actively participates in a Gang Response and Intervention Program. Despite these challenges, our students are also bright, happy students who love coming to school and are eager to learn!

My Project

Students will be able to plan, create, author and illustrate their own hardcover books! After finishing their book, students will read them to their Big Buddies at school. All published pieces will be on display at Open House for families to read and enjoy. Students may then take their stories and illustrations home and keep them forever! Individual writing pieces and illustrations will be displayed monthy and complied into the hard cover book at the end of year. This project addresses many VAPA Standards for Kindergarten including: paint pictures expressing ideas about family and neighborhood, demonstrating beginning skill in the use of tools and processes, such as the use of scissors, glue, and paper in creating a three-dimensional construction; making a collage with cut or torn paper shapes/forms. 4.3 Discuss how and why they made a specific work of art.

Even though our little learners are in a high poverty school, they deserve rich artistic and literacy experiences!

Authoring and illustrating your own story is significant and important. It is a treasure that honors each student! Our students' stories are a reflection of who they are- individual, unique and entertaining! Thank you for considering our project for funding by the Disney CREATE Grants and for supporting art, creativity and expression!
