Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are an amazing group of kids that make me smile every day. Most of my students live at or near poverty levels. Regardless of the tough situations they face in life, they come to school every day eager to learn as much as possible.
They each have different learning styles and interests but regardless of their differences, they have learned that focus and hard work are the two most important elements required for academic success.
They have learned that through resilience and grit they can accomplish anything they set their minds on. I am so fortunate to be their teacher because I get to witness all of the amazing feats they accomplish every day.
My Project
Social and emotional learning or SEL is defined as the ability to apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills needed to understand and manage emotions, achieve goals, make responsible decisions, feel and show empathy for others, and foster and maintain positive relationships. SEL can provide a safe and positive learning environment and improve every students' ability to succeed in school, careers, and life.
Research shows that SEL can have a powerful impact on school climates and promote not only academic benefits but also social, and emotional benefits for students.
During our daily morning meeting, I focus on an SEL lesson for students to be mindful of during the day. The use of the Mindful Classroom Daily 5 Minute Practices and the 52 Essential Conversations: The Life Skills Card Game, will aid in providing a direct focus for each lesson and deepen our classroom conversations. A few times during the day we take a few moments for meditation to calm our bodies and focus our minds. The book Mindful Me: Mindfulness and Meditation for kids will provide direct lessons and activities to teach my students the benefits of meditation and self-control.
During read-aloud time we will utilize the books in the Growth Mindset Collection for great classroom discussions and projects. These books teach important life lessons such as not being afraid to take risks, the importance of persistence and effort, and realizing that mistakes are necessary to learn new things.
By donating to my project, you will provide materials needed to improve student emotional awareness/expression, problem-solving, self-confidence, impulse control, conflict resolution, empathy, increase their academic achievement, and create a positive and supportive classroom culture for my students to thrive in.
