Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Imagine beginning school in a new language and needing to master grade-level content plus the English language in one year. Tricky. Students need books at home to be successful.
Our students represent 10 different languages and 17 different countries around the world.
Many are refugees and have had traumatic backgrounds. All of our students receive free lunch. Before they even begin Kindergarten they are behind. Teachers work hard to provide a loving and language-rich environment.
My Project
Students will use these books to read with their families at home. We will continue to work with parents so they understand ways to help their child in literacy in any language. These books will allow families to support their children in quality ways using resources that they do not currently have.
Kids need to be able to read!
Students will be more likely to learn to read and leave Kindergarten on grade level if they have access to many books at home. They come in so far behind, but have the chance to close the gap with native English speakers through language-rich education and support at home.
