Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This year I have been researching ways to help some of my students with special needs. I am focusing on ways to help all of my students to get the education that they need.
Movement is an integral part of learning and some students need even more than others.
We cannot expect every seven year old to sit quietly all day. How can someone focus on their work when they are trying so hard just to sit still?
The students that would benefit from standing desks are bright and enthusiastic children who have a difficult time with school because they are unable to sit still for the same amount of time as their peers. Some of these students have been diagnosed with ADHD, while others are anxious, constantly on the move, or simply need another option other than sitting at traditional desks. When they are up and moving around the room, they are distracting their classmates. Therefore, all of my students will essentially benefit from these desks.
My Project
My goal in obtaining three standing desks is to first pilot the idea within my school, and to figure out which students benefit from it and how to make it work within the classroom. My goal is that particular students will be able to move about more and get more energy out as they stand and work, in turn, being able to focus much more easily. This will create a better functioning and engaging learning environment for all students.
Children are all so different from one another.
As a teacher, I can not expect every student to be able to sit in one place and focus the same as another student. My goal as a teacher is to make learning accessible for every student and to do this, I need to have the necessary tools available for them.
