My Students

For low-income families, it is often difficult to travel to new places or keep up with new innovations and current events. A subscription to a magazine like Time for Kids could help many young students stay up-to-date with the world around them AND become more interested in reading!

My students are mostly from Spanish-speaking homes.

Often times these students haven't even left their small neighborhood in years. In the past, I have taken groups on field trips where they first experienced what it is like to ride an escalator, or where they first hiked in the mountains - and we are in Colorado! They are working very hard to learn all of their elementary content as well as the English language. Their goals for the future are similar to those of higher-income, English-speaking peers, but they have to work twice as hard to get there. They often have difficult home/family lives, but never cease to amaze me with the growth they are able to make in school. I feel incredibly lucky to work with and learn from these kids, and am constantly inspired by their positive attitudes and determination.

My Project

Having Time for Kids in the classroom would open so many doors for discussion of current events and cultures. They know very little about the world outside of their neighborhood but are very eager learners. By reading about and discussing these topics the kids would also be collaborating with each other, sharing their opinions, asking questions, and searching for answers - all very important skills for kids and adults alike.

My job as their teacher is to prepare them to be strong, productive adults in this constantly changing world, and using Time for Kids is one of the best ways I can think of to do that!
