I am presently a first year 8th grade World History teacher at a Title 1 junior high school. All of my students qualify for free and reduced lunch. With the recent budget cuts to Alabama Education, new teachers have not received funds to purchase basic supplies for our classrooms, nor has the Social Studies department received kits to effectively facilitate classroom activities (i.e. maps, class sets of textbooks, transparencies to accompany text materials, or study guides.) I have purchased many supplies out of pocket but I am finding it hard to continue to do so. My students attend school religiously, despite adversity.
My students are eager to learn; however, we do not have the basic supplies to facilitate learning. Many of the students have a difficult time obtaining the basic supplies necessary for school. I have 13 year-old students with children, and other adult responsibilities, who find it hard to purchase the necessary items to attend school. I firmly believe all students, despite circumstance, deserve everything they need in school. I have been able to dispel the myth of history as a boring subject and maintained student interest in the subject. It is becoming increasingly difficult to help them imagine map locations of ancient societies instead of having the resources available. Many students have computer access at home or the local library and I would like them to have digital access to the class text.
To help facilitate group work and collaborative learning, respect for self and others and a commitment to learning, I am requesting the basic supplies to meet my students needs. These supplies include, but are not limited to, chart tablets and markers, pencils, a pencil sharpener, CDs and sleeves, computer paper, construction paper, maps, and a projector screen to simply make it through the day and provide supplies that will offer an alternative to copying noted from the board.
By providing the basic supplies, you will help my students become more effective learners. I will be able to ensure that all students have access to the textbook. I can also facilitate group activities to help them communicate effectively and develop partnerships with their peers. I can provide sharpened pencils to students who cannot afford them. I can allow them to display their classwork creatively and no longer will they have to imagine the locations of the ancient civilizations they learn. I can help foster a love for World History and learning. Thank you for your consideration!
