My students need an updated, age appropriate globe and world map, as well as engaging stories to help them develop global awareness and diversity appreciation.
Anyone up for a trip around the world? I wish I could pack my bags and take my class on real field trip around the world to learn about how the rest of the world works. We are physically limited to local trips only, but our imaginations are free to travel far and wide!
My students have vivid imaginations and an unlimited sense of adventure.
They are eager to grow up so they can start saving the world. They also have a great sense of acceptance for diversity and love learning about other cultures. I am privileged to teach second grade in a rural public school serving 500 students. Because our school is in a community with a growing socioeconomic divide between the poor and wealthy, I strive daily to provide an equitable experience to all students.
My Project
The resources included in this project will help my students develop a sense of how the rest of the world lives. Literature is a wonderful way for kids to connect with a wide range of global diversity. Everyone will take their own path in this lifetime and I want to make sure my students have as many routes possible open for the exploration. Students this age have a hard time grasping the geographical structure of the world so the globe and map will help them locate the places the are learning about as they read.
I don't get to spend as much time with direct instruction developing global awareness and diversity education as I would like, but creating this World Exploration Reading Center will allow students to learn independently while also improving reading skills.
This learning center will expose students to future paths they may want to take later in life in their quest to make the world a better place.
