This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My second graders attend school in a growing community surrounded by fields of crops just outside Silicone Valley. Our school is diverse and about half of our students come from low income families. It's a great school with hard-working teachers, an involved Parent Club, and a principal who cares.

This year, we're trying to improve our school library by adding more diverse books and highlighting an author and a theme each month.

So far, readership is up and the students are really enjoying the monthly themes and learning about new authors. Many of my students check the themed bookshelf and the author of the month shelf first each week to find a book that interests them.

I am requesting a collection of graphic novels for our school library. Graphic novels are comic books that even the most reluctant readers love to read. By combining words and pictures on each page, graphic novels look and feel more approachable to all students, especially students who might struggle with reading. They are also a great way to improve students' visual processing skills, comprehension skills, and critical thinking skills. We have a few graphic novels in our library, but with over 500 students at our school, we don't have nearly enough for all the students who would like to read them. With your support we can add many more graphic novels to our library. Thank you!
