Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

When you discover a topic that your students are interested in, go with it, and it will become a great learning experience. That is what has happened in my classroom. I teach a 2nd grade homeroom which includes Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies. My students are multi-cultural and still learning English. The parents are very appreciative of anything their children learn in school so that they can go home and teach them the information in their language and then in English also.

My students have shown a great deal of interest in dinosaurs. We started our unit on dinosaurs by asking all kinds of questions they had about dinosaurs. Where did they live? How do we know they lived? What did they eat? Where did they all go? Will they come back? What is a fossil? After we studied dinosaurs and began to answer some of these questions the students thought that it would be cool to become Paleontologists and have a Dinosaur Dig of their own. In order to make this come true there are materials needed to complete their Dinosaur Dig and become Paleontologists.

The future Paleontologists will create leg-like fossils, skulls, hipbones, and other dinosaur skeletal forms from the Model Magic and coffee stirrers. Then, the skeletal forms will be left to air-dry. The fossils will get painted with watercolor paints. The painted fossils will get buried in the Dinosaur Dig Boxes (plastic storage boxes) filled with aquarium gravel. The Paleontologists will unearth the fossils, very carefully, with toothpicks and brushes, just like a professional Paleontologist would. The project continues when the students will put their fossils together with additional Model Magic to create the dinosaur of their choice. A drawing of their dinosaur will be glued onto the lid of the Dinosaur Dig Box with a glue stick and decorated with glitter glue. An Inquiry Report with facts about their dinosaur will also be included on the side of their box. The dinosaurs will be displayed and stored in the Dinosaur Dig Box for safe keeping. The students will get a hands-on experience of all the work a Paleontogist must do, from beginning to end, to complete a dinosaur dig.

You could make a dream come true for 2nd graders who have a love for dinosaurs. These children's creativity and knowledge will "pop" because of your generosity to this project. After this project is completed their self-confidence will be sky-high. Who knows, someday in the future you may have inspired a young child to become a Paleontologist.
