Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
This year we will study different American voices, and with Sherman Alexie's best-selling novel, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, my students will understand the struggles of the Native American in the United States while sharing an insightful and compelling story as a class.
I teach 90 students in three 8th grade classes in what is considered an 'economically-disadvantaged' middle school, yet kids are happy and excited to be there and are enthusiastic readers!
My students come from many different backgrounds and yet are all American.
My Project
We will read The Absolutely True Story of a Part-Time Indian as a class, using the novel as a major discussion point for personal and cultural identity as well as an appreciation of Sherman Alexie's craft as a writer. This book will help students to bring the discussion of the struggles and successes of the Native American populations into a modern conversation. This novel is ranked #1 under "Native American Literature" on Amazon and other reputable sources, and many other teachers have had great success teaching this novel. With the addition of some other books by Alexie to our library, interested children will be able to explore his writing further on their own.
This novel not only enlightens students to the current situation of Native American reservation life but also is written from the perspective of a teen protagonist.
Alexie intertwines the plight of the modern Native American with that of a modern teenager, in a funny and insightful way. I think my students will connect with the themes and concepts in this novel, and that it will be a highlight of our class for the year.
