My students are a fun, caring, and inquisitive group of five and six year olds. They come to school each day excited and ready to learn. They are not afraid to try new things or make mistakes.
My classroom is filled with a diverse bunch of kindergarteners who have different ability levels, needs, languages, cultures, and social skills.
The languages represented in our classroom include English, Japanese, Korean, Ukrainian, Spanish, and Bengali. Some have speech impairments and other health concerns. Aside from their differences, each child is working towards achieving their personal best. They are becoming independent readers, writers, and problem solvers.
My students are learning many things in kindergarten. They are learning social skills like working cooperatively and sharing. Many have never been to school before so they are also learning how to listen attentively and become a student. The expectations are set high for these young ones, with the year end standard in reading to read emergent reader books independently. It can be very difficult to focus and accomplish these goals inside a classroom with temperatures reaching the 80s and 90s.
My Project
Our classroom is at a terrific school in Torrance, California. The weather gets very hot in the fall and spring and our older classroom does not have air conditioning. While our classroom is full of fans, they do very little to cool down the temperature and often cause a distraction. When it is too hot outside, we do not go outside to play.
With the temperature being so hot, it is physically uncomfortable to be in the classroom and very little learning is accomplished.
The addition of a portable air conditioning unit would provide a cooler, much more comfortable environment in which students can reach their full potential. They will be better able to concentrate and ultimately, achieve more learning!
