As a society, we are all becoming aware of the growing trend of childhood obesity and the health concerns connected to it. North Carolina has addressed the issue for the 2005-2006 school year by mandating that all elementary age students will participate in at least a moderate intensity level of physical exertion for at least 30 minutes each school day. This does not include recess. My school provides a physical education (PE) teacher who directs students in organized physical fitness activities for 30 minutes two days a week. Therefore, there are three days a week when the classroom teacher must direct the physical activity for the students in classroom. I plan to fulfill this requirement by establishing physical fitness stations in my classroom. I will set up 10 stations to be used by pairs of students who perform the assigned activity at that station for one to two minutes and then rotate to the next station. This will provide for a variety of activities at a fast pace. Students will rotate to these stations two to three times a day, fulfilling the 30 minute requirement. The stations will be fast-paced, thereby alleviating student inattention and boredom. The variety of the stations will provide a setting in which all students can succeed at one or more activities, thus increasing self-esteem along with physical fitness.
