My Project

Culinary arts play a significant role in Career Technology Education and STEM. Integrating creativity, science, and practical skills allows students to explore career and college readiness opportunities. Kids get excited when teachers teach outside the box! These unique opportunities allow students to gain crafty, creative, and innovative experiences. Cake and cookie decorating is one way to enhance culinary experiences through STEM and scientific investigation. Many of my students have limited access to food science experimentation due to high poverty rates, homelessness, and lack of funding for younger students' specialized programs like culinary arts.

I aim to have students tap into their ingenuity by exploring cake and cookie decorating while engaging in science experimentation to make ice cream in a bag, how cool is that?

Making this experience possible requires several basic tools to get started. When decorating cakes and cookies every beginning decorator needs icing, a decorating turntable with accessories, decorating tool kits with a variety of icing tips, couplers, piping bags, food coloring, and sprinkles. To enhance the student's skill level, a book with inspiring ideas is necessary to create boundless iced creations.

Students must be prepared for food safety techniques, so we need aprons, chef hats, disposable gloves, and compostable plates when handling food. Once students gain confidence in decorating prepared treats they need to explore how to use a toaster oven, oven mitts, and, cookware to experiment with the science of cooking by baking simple sweet treats. Food preparation involves science, so we want to also experiment with making ice cream in a bag to top off our decorating experience thus we need rock salt and a variety of ziploc bag sizes to make this possible. Culinary arts and food science enhance student knowledge, creativity, and innovation. Ready, set, go, let's make the impossible, possible!
