Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
It is my honor and privilege to be able to teach a group of 23 highly motivated, compassionate, and intelligent first grade students in Illinois.
My students are very observant and they enjoy interacting with the world around them.
In our classroom, we never sit still! I am always trying to get my students up and moving around, singing, or exploring in small groups to make learning engaging. They learn best when they are having fun. I work very hard to provide my students with meaningful experiences on a daily basis.
My Project
The young mathematicians in my classroom need hands-on experiences learning how to count groups of objects, or collections. Counting collections is a structured opportunity for my students to discover how to count by grouping objects and counting one-by-one, by 2's, 5's or by creating groups of tens and extra ones.
Our counting collections would be created using the rainbow linking chains, game pieces, small figurines, bingo chips, and building blocks that are requested in this project.
My students will use the 100 charts as a reference when counting or writing numbers. The tens frames will be introduced as my students begin to understand place value concepts to help them counter larger sets of objects.
After my students count their collections they will record their thinking and share their learning experiences during our daily math talk time. Having a strong number sense and problem solving skills in first grade will set up students up for future success in math!
