Hands on experiences are the best way for young children to learn about the world around them. I am a first grade teacher at Lynn Road Elementary School. a Title I school in Raleigh, NC, who loves to engage my curious children in inquiry based science activities. To help my students really connect with the natural world and thoroughly master the NC life sciences goals for their age, I am requesting an STC Organisms Kit. This kit will allow me to bring live plants and animals into our school and give me the resources I need to lead meaningful inquiry based lessons. The children will learn to investigate, observe, and problem solve while developing new vocabulary, a clearer understanding of the world around them, and the ability to communicate this knowledge verbally and through written work.
I will extend the lessons included in this kit by having the children plant and care for seeds on the school grounds thereby beautifying our learning environment. We will also take field trips to Duke Gardens and The NC Museum of Natural History to enable the students to further their understanding in this area and to see real world applications of the knowledge they have gained by exploring possible career choices that incorporate a background in the life sciences. As a culminating activity, we will host our first annual 'Science Share.' This will be an event open to parents and other interested community members at which students will lead activities and discuss their observations and findings, giving them the opportunity to take on the roles of teachers. This will be a great opportunity to assess the growth and learning that these materials will have made possible!
