My Students

Middle schoolers are amazing. They're young enough that they're still enthusiastic about everything, and they're old enough to be aware that the choices they make every day will impact them in the future.

A big part of my job as a middle school teacher and librarian is building the skills of self-awareness and self-advocacy in each of my students.

I teach them to think about and understand what they need to be successful and how to get the supports they've identified.

Our school has a diverse grouping of students learning English as a new language, students with physical and learning disabilities, students from all five boroughs of New York City, and students from every socio-economic background you can imagine. What do all of these kids have in common? Each and every one of them can learn. Each and every one of them can be successful. Each and every one of them is cared for in our school. Each and every one of them is special to me.

My Project

A big trend in school libraries across the countries is including makerspaces. Our school's library was lucky enough to win an INNOVATION! grant of a makerspace cart filled with incredible resources, including Ozobots, Dash and Dot Wonderpacks, and MeeperBots. These resources require iPads in order to code and program them. Unfortunately, our school's iPads are outdated and cannot support the apps necessary to fully utilize these learning resources.

Teaching middle schoolers to code will help them build not only the technological literacy they will need to be competitive as college and career ready students over the next few years, but will also teach students grit, perseverance, and collaborative skills.

We are so lucky to have won these technologies for our school library, but we need an iPad to maximize the learning and growing we can do with these technologies.

The iPad and its case would allow students to explore the worlds of coding, debugging, teamwork, problem-solving, and technological literacy. The iPad is the key to unleashing the power of the technology we already have.
