My Students

As a 5th grade teacher, I desire to encourage my students' growth as readers and writers. My greatest challenge is that my district is not yet able to purchase materials to support the new Common Core reading/writing standards.

I teach fifth graders.

My class size varies from one year to the next, ranging from 25-30 students in one classroom. Students come from a variety of family and socioeconomic contexts. Some are well-supported academically, emotionally and relationally in their homes. Others are from contexts that offer less support. In all cases, students benefit from the opportunity to read rich and rigorous literature. Not only is there opportunity to develop reading skills and strategies, but, also, to participate in facilitated class discussions which help students connect literature themes to their own lives. The classroom is often the first place that a student connects with a book, or a character in literature, in ways that play a part in shaping his/her own personal and emotional growth. It is a deeply meaningful experience to offer care, both academically and emotionally, to students, within the context of literature.

My Project

Using the nonfiction title, Kids at Work, and the Read Side by Side, C.I.A. curriculum, students will engage in literary discussions, respond to reading in Reading Notebook activities and write at least four formal pieces of writing related to the literature. To deepen understanding, students will, also, read several nonfiction articles, look at maps, and view videos. The beauty of this literature study is that it tailors wonderfully with Common Core reading and writing standards. In the end, I believe this piece of nonfiction will help equip students as readers and writers.

Presently, our district is unable to purchase materials that support our Common Core reading and writing standards.

I have used not only my personal funds, but the education stipend I'm given each year, to pay for my own professional development, and the Read Side by Side, C.I.A. curriculum. The donation of this literature set will support students as readers and writers, giving them, also, a deeper understanding of an important time in our nation's history. Learning will be rich and deep.
