This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Hello! I am a 6th-grade teacher in East Los Angeles! We are a neighborhood school and most of our students are able to walk here! Our school has been in the East LA community for 7 years now (our first graduating class has just graduated high school!), and have had the privilege of being able to teach siblings and be apart of students' families for many years.

While I am a math teacher, I strongly believe in the power of reading and discovering other worlds and perspectives through books.

With over 100 students passing through my classroom each day, each with their own unique interests, my library can never have too many books!

Since our students are coming back in person and will be able to utilize my class library, I want to make sure I have something for everyone. My students' current favorites are graphic novels, anime/manga, dramas, and thanks to Netflix, Twilight. We have students with reading levels from kindergarten to high school, and students who are learning English.

My Project

Now that kid are returning to school, we are going to jump headfirst into reading! With 400+ students about to come through our gates, we can't wait to get a strong reading culture, and a little competition, going!

I have carefully curated a list that reflects my students' interests, backgrounds and also provides a look into the lives of those different from them.

I hope that these books will provide a window into other experiences and broaden students views of the world around them.

I have also made sure that these books span multiple reading levels, as we have students from kindergarten reading levels all the way to high school levels. My students are particularly loving graphic novels these days, so I made sure to include plenty of those!
