During the 2005-2006 school year, I will be teaching 3rd grade in south San Jose at Hayes Elementary School. I am responsible for teaching all subjects (math, language arts, science, social studies, P.E.). The 20 students I will teach are Hispanic, Caucasian, Vietnamese, African American, and Japanese. I have heard a lot of wonderful feedback about the Humane Society's Kids & Kindness education program and have made arrangements for my class to participate this fall. Kids & Kindness is an innovative school enrichment program that teaches lifelong values of responsibility and kindness toward others through learning about the role of companion pets as important members of the family and our community. This program is provided by the Santa Clara County Humane Society; however, it is not provided free of charge. The docent who comes to the class once a week for 8 weeks is donating his/her time to a worthy cause and we will need to pay the Humane Society for the program and materials. As required by California State law (Education Code 44806), schools must provide humane education programs to teach the facts, values and behaviors which promote respect for life, concern for the environment and appropriate behavior for all animals, both human and non-human. The cost of the program covers presentation materials provided by the presenter, hard bound program books that the children work in, and eight weeks of lessons. Last year we spent an inordinate amount of time preparing for standardized testing and this year as I will be looping (taking my 2nd graders to 3rd grade), I would like to give them varied learning opportunities besides filling in bubble tests. Since this will be the students second year together as a team, I would like them to focus on people skills and how to get along with others in class and the outside world.
