it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at Hayes Elementary School in South San Jose. I have a classroom of 20 third graders of various backgrounds and ethnicities. I teach all subject areas from reading to math to social studies and science. I'm trying to get funding for a really cool program called Kids and Kindness.
Kids and Kindness is an innovative school enrichment program for third graders that is provided by the Humane Society. This program brings the community into the classroom, providing experiences with pets and real life learning situations, helping to enhance what teachers with limited resources might not be able to provide.
During the eight weeks of hour-plus lessons, students deal with real life situations involving math, science, language arts and the creative arts related to the needs of human beings as well as those related to pets we welcome into our homes. The lessons at our school are supplemented by weekly interactions with the Kids and Kindness instructor's dog (Grady), a personal journal for each student and many photos of the students involved in the various activities of the program. Each lesson involves a study of a "Word of the Day" and activities recorded in the journal. A letter to the parents is sent home each time explaining the content of the lesson and asking that they review its contents with their child. The eight week session culminates with a graduation ceremony, a final photo session with Grady and a party celebrating that the students are now "kind kids".
This is an excellent program. I've been able to observe kids in the past who've experienced the presentations. The kids get very excited and motivated to have this program. Their eyes "light up" when the docent and her dog Grady enter the room. Many of the kids at Hayes are seldom exposed to the values that this program teaches. Both parents and teachers have reported a positive attitude toward pets engendered by the program.
