Kids And College: Closing The Test Score Gap

My students need 13 test preparation books for college admissions tests.

My Students

Help College become a reality for us! Year after year my students struggle with obtaining the required scores on college admissions test. It is very heartbreaking to see my students earn above average GPAs and have SAT or ACT scores prevent them from attending the college of their dream.

My students are amazing, and their excitement about college inspires me daily.

My students are in grades nine through twelve and they are fascinated with the thought of going to college. Our school is a public traditional high school in a rural, low wealth community in North Carolina. About 70 to 72% of our students graduate from high school in four years. Last year, 84.6% of our graduating class was accepted to a two year or four year institution of higher learning. Seventy five percent of our graduates are first generation college students who are determined to be successful through education.

My Project

Students will use test preparation books and software to learn the skills needed to improve their SAT and ACT scores. Kaplan, The Princeton Review, and The College Board materials will bridge the gap between my students and their prospective colleges and universities. I currently have only 2 test preparation books that are over 5 years old. Students check these books out constantly. They crave information that will help them on their quest to get accepted to their #1 school. Students will use the guides and flash cards to improve their vocabulary, writing, and mathematics problem solving skills.

When I discuss college with my students, they "light up." Incorporating this project will result in higher chances of acceptance for my students especially if they can begin preparing as early as the ninth grade.

This will also inspire students to work for greater academic success, to pursue a more rigorous curriculum, and to craft the highest quality resume possible. High school will become less a quest for a diploma and more an experience to prepare students for greater things.
