My Students

My students are a diverse group of third graders who love to learn. They come from a variety of cultural, linguistic and socioeconomic backgrounds. In our classroom, we celebrate our differences as we create a classroom community, embracing challenges and supporting each other.

My students thrive when given a variety of learning opportunities.

They love small group instruction because they are able to receive more individualized attention from the teacher, move at their own pace and work closely with their classmates.

My Project

In our classroom, students participate in daily, small group instruction in reading and math. This allows me to meet their individual needs and help them grow from where they are. It also gives students the opportunity to learn from their peers and work collaboratively in a structured setting.

A kidney table provides the most effective seating arrangement for small group instruction.

In the past, I have met with small groups on the carpet and at rectangular tables, but there are limitations to these arrangements. At a kidney table, all students can easily see the teacher as well as each other. Also, I can see each student's work in order to help them more effectively. When small group instruction is successful, students soar!

I would be able to use this kidney table for years of small group instruction, so it would impact many classes of students in the future, as well.
