My Project
Just as the dining room table is at the heart of the home, the kidney table is at the heart of reading intervention. In fact, many students will draw a kidney shaped reading table when asked to write about reading time in the classroom. The kidney shaped design is intended to facilitate small group collaboration and interaction among students, with its shape being the key feature that allows for easy face-to-face communication and group work. The Reading Intervention Table is an innovative, educational tool where I will help children struggling with reading comprehension, fluency, and phonics skills. In addition to its interactive features, the Kidney Reading Intervention Table is built to foster collaboration and peer support, encouraging group activities and interactive reading sessions. This hands-on intervention table integrates dynamic visual, auditory, and tactile elements to engage multiple learning styles, helping students connect with text on a deeper level.
This table will allow me to use interactive components, provide explicit reading instruction, individual feedback, and targeted support based on each child’s individual reading challenges.
By incorporating visual aids and movement, the table transforms reading practice into an immersive, playful experience, enhancing both motivation and learning outcomes.
My goal for this project would be to provide an arc of learning that facilitates a love for reading and that sparks hopes and dreams in students that they would otherwise not have because they struggle to read. My dream is to free them from their reading struggles and release them to a world of possibilities, right from the center of my reading table. Fredrick Douglas says, “Once you learn to read, you will be forever free.” I want them to be free to dream and do whatever they can imagine with the gift of literacy developed around this kidney table.
