Kidney Shaped Table for Small Group Instruction

My Students

Third Grade is a year of amazing growth for students. Students work diligently on learning their multiplication facts, writing detailed stories, and working on reading skills. All of this could not be possible without the support of community members and parents.

My class of 23 students is filled with many different personalities and backgrounds.

I have students of different cultures, as well as different beliefs. Our school is made up of almost 400 students (25% which are free/reduced) who try to embody our 3 major school rules of being respectful, responsible, and safe. Every day, teachers encourage students to dream, believe, think, and achieve.

My Project

A kidney-shaped table would be very beneficial for the students in my classroom. I teach 3rd grade at an elementary school, and many of the students in my classroom need assistance with reading and math skills.

Reading is an area in which students cannot afford to be struggling because problems in reading often carry over into other subject areas.

Third grade math is also an area where new skills are introduced and small group work is essential in their retention of the presented skill. However, without the proper materials, small group instruction can be difficult. It is hard to meet with a group of 5 students gathered around a group of desks and be accessible to each child. It is also hard for students to stay on task in this sort of situation, which makes improving students' reading and math skills more difficult.

A kidney-shaped table would help with this dilemma. The benefit of this type of table is that the teacher is within an arm's reach of each student. Children are more focused when they are in close proximity to the teacher, and when children are focused, they are able to make greater strides in gaining the reading skills in which they are lacking.
