Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach first grade in a low income school. Most of my students are on free or reduced lunch, and we have a high percentage of students who are English as a Second Language (ESL).
I have come to realize that my students have little exposure to science. I teach science as part of our curriculum, but my students need more practice with hands-on experiences that encourage questioning and experimenting.
That is where KidScience comes in! Our guest speaker, the 'Science Lady,' will work with me in developing hands-on activities that relate to our state science curriculum. She will come to my classroom and present programs that last 30-45 minutes long. For instance, she will present Kooky Concoctions which allows students to test some safe but interesting chemical properties. Then they will make a lava wand to take home.
In this proposal, I am asking for funding for 9 sessions of KidScience programs-one for each month of school from September through May. This truly is an exceptional way to expose all of my students to hands-on science activities. What a great way to have my students become curious and explore questioning, experimenting, and drawing conclusions in the most fun and creative way.
